ANCIENT MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Parai: One of the oldest drums used in South India. Kurunthokai, 2 BC - 2 AD (A classical Tamil poetic work) mentions that this instrument was used as an auspicious instrument in weddings.

Yaazh: This instrument was the ancestor of modern day Veena. It is mentioned in Thirukkural, Tamil poetry work from 200 BC. Silappadikaram (One of The Five Great Epics of Tamil Literature) mentions four kinds of Yaazhs.

ANCIENT LITERATURES

Tholkaapiyam - Earliest extent work of Tamil literature and a work on the grammar of the Tamil language.

Natrinai - A classical Tamil poetic work. It is a book of Ettuthokai, a Sangam Literature anthology. It contains 400 poems dealing with the five landscapes of Sangam poetry.

Kuruntokai - A classical Tamil poetic work. It is a book of Ettuthokai, a Sangam literature anthology. It contains poems dealing with matters of love and separation.

Ainkurunuru - A classical Tamil poetic work containing five hundred short poems. It is a book of Ettuthokai, a Sangam literature anthology.

Pathitrupathu - A classical Tamil Poetic Work. 'Pathitrupathu', means 'ten tens'.

Akananuru - A classical Tamil poetic work. It is a book of Ettuthokai, a Sangam literature anthology. It contains Akam (subjective) poems.

Purananuru - A classical Tamil poetic work. It is a book of Ettuthokai, a Sangam literature anthology. It is a treatise on Kingship.

Kalittokai - An anthology of 150 poems in Kali metre of varied length dealing with all phases and types of love experience.

Paripatal - A classical Tamil poetic work. It is a book of Ettuthokai, a Sangam literature anthology. It contains seventy poems on various deities.

Koothanool - Is an ancient trait on the art of dance.

SANGAM MARUVIYA KAALAM - Post Sangam or Ethical Period (2AD - 5AD)

பாவோ டணைதல் இசையென்றார் பண்ணென்றார் - Being surrounded by verses, they called it music, they called it melody.

Silappadikaram - It is one the five great epics of Tamil literature. A poet-prince, Ilango Adigal, wrote this work.

Manimekalai - It is one the five great epics of Tamil literature. The poet Chithalai Chathanar wrote this work.

Muthollaayiram - It is a poetry collection and the title implies that there were 2,700 poems out of which only 109 survived.

Thiruvasagam - It is a volume of Tamil hymns and constitutes of eight volume of the Tirumurai.

Karaikal Ammaiyar - She is one of the greatest figures of early Tamil literature.

Civaka Cintamani - It is a classical epic poet. It is a jain religious epic authored by Tirutakkatevar.

Thirumanthiram - A Tamil Poetic work written by Thirumular and is the tenth volume of Tirumurai.

Azhwars - They were Tamil poet-saints who adopted devotion to God Vishnu.
